Why didn’t anybody tell you?
When I talk to folks in Phoenix about the SRP board election, they are flabbergasted to learn that they have a right to vote.
Do you know about your voting rights and how it affects your pocketbook?
If you own a home in most areas of the Valley of the Sun, you might have a right to vote in the SRP board election —even if you are an APS customer.
Check this link to see if your property (or properties) are eligible.
Yes, you can vote from multiple properties. Crazy, huh?
I asked a couple very nice staff at SRP about it. They explained that they do try to let people know. They announce the election on bill inserts.
Raise your hand if you still get your bill in the mail, and ever see a bill insert. Raise your hand if you are an APS customer with SRP voting rights.
This is entirely too little effort. But, I don’t blame the staff.
The SRP Board has an obligation to educate shareholders, especially given how confusing the election rules are.
But seriously. Try harder.
What the board does spend money on instead.
I was shocked to learn that the Board gives tons of cash to organizations that work against money-saving clean energy and energy efficiency. See the article at this link. The Board has decided to prioritize efforts that reduce your energy freedom and which will increase your bills.
I have seen the direct affect of these out-of-state special interest groups. They lobby Congress to cut funding for energy efficiency programs, for programs that reduce the cost of solar for homeowners and which fund the broader clean energy transition.
Many of these same groups are vocal in opposition of local efforts to hold AI data centers accountable, to keep them from shifting the cost burden on to you and from sucking up our precious water.
If elected I will challenge this spending and push the Board to conduct meaningful public outreach about your voting rights.
The Board should be spending at least one dollar per eligible land owner in SRP’s “votable lands.”
That could come in the form of direct letters, billboards, digital ads.
